Warm Season

St. Augustine Grass

St. Augustine grass is medium to dark green grass, with wide grass blades and coarse textured. It grows well in nearly all soil types and can grow in moderate to medium shade. St. Augustine grass is the most popular warm-season turf grass for home lawns in the southern United States. Some of the more popular varieties are Common, Raleigh, Seville, Palmetto and Floratam. Newer varieties like CitraBlue, Provista are modern adaptations to popular classic St. Augustine grass.

Zoysia Grass

Zoysia grass is a dark green to medium green grass with a dense growth habit. Zoysia grass can come in a medium blade or fine blade variety.

Bermuda Grass

Bermuda grass is a fine to medium textured grass with a deep green color and an aggressive, fast growing habit. It thrives in full sun and stands up to heat, drought, and heavy foot traffic better than most warm-season grasses. That toughness makes it a favorite for home lawns, sports fields, and high traffic areas across the south. Bermuda does need steady sun to stay thick, so it is not the right pick for shaded yards. Popular varieties include Common Bermuda, Celebration, Tifway 419, and TifTuf.

Centipede Grass

Centipede grass is a light to medium green grass with a slow, low growing habit and coarse blades. It is one of the lowest maintenance warm-season turf grasses, asking for less mowing and less fertilizer once it is established. Centipede does well in acidic, sandy soils and handles moderate shade, which makes it a practical choice for southern home lawns. People sometimes call it "lazy man's grass" because it needs so little care. It does not take heavy traffic or wear as well as Bermuda or Zoysia.
